What does it mean “to pink” something, and how did the color become associated with Valentine’s Day?

"You are minding your own business in the grocery store when wham! Pink hearts and candies placed at eye level by merchants remind you that once again, Valentine’s Day is here.
Why pink? How did pink become so strongly associated with February 14, roses and romance?
The word pink dates back to the 1570s, when “to pink” was to create a small cut or perforation, such as on a decorated edge (think pinking shears).
The story of pink’s link to color is an incredible story of linguistic conversion. That’s the concise way to say the word started out as a verb, became a noun, and, after that, an adjective.
Let’s not forget that small but crucial part of your hand, the pinkie. Learn what it has to do with the color pink, here.
The Dutch associated pinck oogen, “small eyes,” with the small, delicate flowers of the Dianthus, whose petals look distinctly perforated or crimped. Common names for Dianthus include carnation and pink, which lead to pink’s association with two more ideas: the color of the flower and the idea of the flower as perfection. Perfection is what Shakespeare’s Mercutio is referring to in Romeo and Juliet when he says, “Nay, I am the very pink of curtesie.”
At the point where scholars pinpoint the first attribution of pink as a color, around 1681, people could not stop talking about it. In Elizabethan England, pink hose were all the fashion for men. Fortunately, Sumptuary Laws, which determined the color of clothing people wore by their social status, made pink available to both the upper and lower classes.
In the 1920s pink started to be used for the marketing of products for boys. The color association was considered appropriate for boys, full of energy, not yet mature enough for the full heat of the color red. Conversely, baby blue was associated with girls as a soft, mild color, and one strongly associated with the Virgin Mary. Post-WWII these associations switched, with pink directed at products for girls and blue for boys.
So why did pink become associated with Valentine’s Day? Our speculation concludes that a combination of pink as perfection, a tiny flower, and the term for crimping as on Valentine cards created an unstoppable combo.

1. Deborah Carter worked on a Photo shoot for Beth Pav, chef extraordinaire and owner of "Cooking by Design."Photographer Cory Ryan (http://www.coryryan.com/ ) and the famous eyebrow guru Karen Powanda. The photos were taken at Beth's house and cooking school location. Deborah brought home the most amazing mascara technique that she learned from Karen. Ask us about it and we'll show you! 2. The Kevin Murphy crew came up with an extremely interesting creation. The "Flip" video camera used to film your stylist, styling you! It has a built in USB, so we can almost immediately download the video, make you a disc, or email it to you. Then you’ll have us in your bathroom every morning giving you a play by play. We are now setting up our computer to download your own video of one of us giving you a lesson.

3. Deborah Carter's is now reading her weekly horoscopes on "Miss Kitty's Friday Flavor" (every Friday night). Kitty calls it, "Dreaming with Deborah." 6. Places to eat in Dripping Springs, Episode 1

"Thyme and Dough" Fresh baked breads and pastries daily. Our favorite place to eat. We have days at Pink West where all we want to eat Thyme and Dough egg salad sandwiches. The Belgian baker/owners, Fabienne Bollom & Marsha Short Webb, bake the Panini fresh every day, layer soft egg salad, pesto, goat cheese and farm to market tomatoes and field greens. There's nothing like it in Austin.

Pink West: Miles Away From Ordinary

Many things have been changing in the past few months. As I’m sure you’re all aware. Pink Austin is closed. As sad as that may make many of us, it also led to the birth of the new Pink West in Dripping Springs, Texas. Where Deborah Carter, newbie protege' Noelle Mastelotto, and the amazing esthetic genius Carrie Napiorkowski are.

“Dripping Springs, you say?”

“Where is that, and what's out there?!”

Well, Pink West is, my pretties, and plenty of other adorable places for you to pop into on your day off That’s what we want this to be for you. Come get your hair done, escape from your life and get treated. Get an amazing back treatment, or a customized facial. Relax. Sit on the porch (in a white rocking chair I may add) with your tea or coffee in your hand and foils on your head. Don’t worry about who’s going to see you. Bring your friends.

Make a day of it.

I suppose I should introduce myself to all you loyal blog readers. Since, of course the lovely ladies from Pink in Austin have found new homes, yours truly, Noelle, is taking over Tyler’s place as the blog writer.

So what have we been up to? I know you’re desperately pondering.

Stepping over boxes for the first few weeks, but still rocking out beautiful do’s nonetheless. Getting everything organized and unpacked is rather time consuming, but absolutely glorifying as we approach our grand opening (when we finally get out sign up.)

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

1. August 26^th - I did hair and makeup on a really fun photo shoot for Melissa Glynn, our wonderful wedding photographer, and designer for our website. She also does boudoir photography. She decided to do this shoot to get a little taste of what its like in front of the camera. All photographs by the amazing Matthew Mahon.

2. August 30^th - September 3^rd - I assisted Farah Carter Reid at her new home in Sabia on W 5^th. Farah is director of education at Blow Salon in New York, in the meatpacking district, where she specializes in blowouts. Wow, what an AMAZING learning experience that was for myself. She is the only (hair) stylist at Sabia, as they are a purely aesthetic salon/spa. We set her up so she does all her cutting in the front room amidst the endlessly interesting retail. All her color processes are done in the back room, dubbed the “cuddle zone,” by Farah. We dim the lights, play relaxing music and give you an amazing shampoo escape or place to hang out while your color processes.

3. September 13^th -16^th - Deborah Carter went to Houston for an educational course with Davines. Came back very excited about some new retail ideas, and the Davines products in general. We are both rather partial to this delicious Italian hair care, and styling line, which commits itself to being remarkably eco-friendly. We are also proud to use their color line in our salon. No one knows brunettes like the Italians.

4. September 21^st - I became certified to perform The Copolla Keratin Hair Treatment. This treatment is formulated to contain natural keratin protein, which rebuilds, restores and rejuvenates all hair types. Not to mention cuts down you’re styling time, reduces frizz/curl, and makes unruly hair much more manageable. I am super excited to offer this service!

5. September 22^nd – Had doors installed to Carrie Napiorkowski’s aesthetic room. So she is officially taking clients. Carrie has an extensive background in aesthetics and worked along doctors for numerous years. She was even an educational instructor at an aesthetic institute. Come check out some of her incredible skills. She offers many customizable facials, but the technique she is famous for is derma-planing.

6. September 23^rd – Haven’t you heard perms are coming back? We did our first perm at Pink West on waist length hair. This is not your mothers' perm. We use Nonsymmetrical patterns and rod sizes and customized wrapping. It will change your curl pattern and not leave you looking like a crazed eighties housewife. Woo-hooooo!

Final Days, Talk Around Town

"[F]or me, Pink was always so much more than a salon," Margaret Moser writes in the Austin Chronicle. "What you have to understand, though, is that Pink was no ordinary salon. An appointment there was like a business meeting and it was a very rock & roll atmosphere. I met all sorts of high-powered men and women and musicians [there]."

Moser continues to reminisce on all of the grand memories, of high fashion, glamor and beauty that pink brought to various Austin events, such as the Austin Music Awards, and Texas Hall of Fame. "[W]hat Deborah and her crew of magicians did for the Presentation Crews at the Austin Music Awards was divine. Every year, they’d transform [...] fresh-faced young women into vibrant confections of color and style, and with that stylish touch only Pink had. When the Texas Film Hall of Fame started up, I didn’t hesitate to tell Rebecca Campbell [to] use Pink, and voila! Instant glam for the right occasion."

Pink Salon is moving July 15th

Pink Hair Salon & Gallery is morphing into a tiny studio in Dripping Springs Texas called "Pink West".

We have had a phenomenal experience being part of the SoCo Austin community, and look forward to our futures. It is a major change, that makes us sad, but with change comes the opportunity to grow, learn and reinvent ourselves. On Wednesday, July 15th Pink SoCo moved,
and September 1st Pink West opens, to raise some dust in Dripping Springs.

If you are one of our clients your stylist should be contacting you in the near future, if they have not already. For your convenience, here is the updated list of Pink Stylists and their new homes:

Last night... Pink hit the runway and of course we stopped the show. OOhh's and AAhh's! Gasps and whistles filled the audience, after each one of our models walked the catwalk modeling Pink Hair, Pink Makeup and Dresses by Chia.

There are no words to describe how spectacular, and phenomenal our hair and make-up was, so I'm just going to have to post photos... these are all just a few off of my personal camera, professional DVD and photos to come... here's just a taste of last night for those of you who didn't make it out to Antone's.

All of our girls at pink are some of the best stylists in Austin, and that's why we have them here with us. We are not a departmentalized salon, so everyone does everything. We are proud to boast our Pink Ladies' talents in coloring and cutting hair, keratin therapy treatments, styles, updos, creativity and our low-boredom threshold.

If you don't already have a stylist that you know and love here at pink it can be hard choosing one because they are all so amazing. That being said, there are certain areas of expertise that I would recommend to new clients coming into pink for the first time. Here are some suggestions for choosing your pink girl:

Love Texture? Do you have short or long hair that's fine and you need some texture and lift? Or thick hair that needs some texturized control to help thin out the bulk? then CHENOH is the girl for you. Chenoh also has a very special way with kids and kids haircuts, they love her, I would highly recommend sending your little ones her way.

Love your Long Hair? If you have long hair that needs extra special treatment when you get your color done, or someone to cut your hair without chopping off all your length? then DEBORAH or LILLI are the girls for you. They also excel at pretty hair, updos, long-hair styles, and Deborah is your gal if you want a beehive.

Love your Curls? Do you have curly hair? Do you love wearing your hair curly but have had trouble finding a stylist who can cut your hair? Have you had trouble with finding a stylist to properly color your curly hair? Then you need to go see SARA O. or JOHANNA. ALL OF OUR GIRLS do Keratin Hair Therapy... The Brazilian Conditioning Treatment that is all the rage for taming fly-aways and semi-permanent curl/wave/frizz control. If your hair seems to constantly battle the humidity, if you're sick of all the frizz you constantly fight with serums, and shine sprays try the Keratin treatment. Its expensive, but lasts from 4-6 months... the keratin we use is gentle on the hair, and recommended for damaged and color-treated hair.

Dear Client X,

You talk about getting a wig like it's a bad thing, when every performer I have ever worked with had dozens of them. Go to an Asian or to a black beauty supply store (find out where they go, you can find great ones that are really affordable) and get a half-a-hair piece and stick it on the back part of your head. It should be a good match, but look slightly better than your color if you don't like your color.

Then go see my girlfriend Sylvie at Estillo on Fairfax. She formulates the color for Jessica Alba and countless others and she isn't that expensive at all. She is also a great cutter and an amazingly wonderful woman. You will love her. If you can wait, of course you can come to see us here, but I believe every woman needs a hairdresser of her own in her own city. It's false economy to get cheap on a hairdresser. A good haircut will last at least six months, while a bad haircut can ruin your life.

Katie Richert

My art is about experiencing and enjoying life. It’s about familiarities and mysteries. It’s about the excitement of color and tone and how that can affect the mood of a painting. The characters in my paintings are in a place of amusement and excitement that represent the winding uncertainties of real life. Each character has a unique feature that aids them in their journey.

I enjoy doing automatic drawings as a means to express my subconscious. By doing this I unearth different characters that express how I feel. With the development of the characters I also explore the world of my dreams. My paintings bring these ideas together. Symbols also play a big part in my art. I’m constantly noticing how people use images as symbols, and I’m developing a way to communicate with the use of symbols.

I’ve been painting for about 18 years. I was born and raised in Louisiana and received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Louisiana State University. A year later, I moved to New York City to continue my education. I lived in New York five years, two of which were spent studying painting at the New York Studio School. I also spent a summer at the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, New York were I studied with several great artist.

From New York I moved back to Louisiana. I lived there for two years, working, painting and getting to know my hometown all over again. The work created there derives directly from my experiences of childhood familiarities but seen in a brand new light. I moved to Austin, Texas in June of 2006. Since that move I have switched from oils to watercolors, pencil and acrylics. My work also got a lot smaller for a while and I focused more on my dreams and how I would behave if I lived in an alternate world. Art allows me to express the emotions that I would otherwise keep private.

Everyone knows things are constantly in motion at pink. There are changes everywhere and we love it. Change provides growth, excitement, evolution, rejuvenation, and fresh perspectives, however; it can also be bittersweet. Our darling Salon Manager, Sheriff, and Deborah's firstborn daughter Brooke Anne Carter, has some big changes of her own that she has taken the time to share. She is an amazing writer & the following story is not only a real treat to read, but inspiring for all of us. We need to remember to take charge in our lives, and if something doesn't feel right, do something different that does. We create our reality, life's too short not to be happy.

In life, when you really want something gone, you just have to Karate chop it out. There isn’t a quick fix really. That magic thing everyone hopes will ease the transition and make it a little bit of a softer blow. Slowly getting into the freezing cold pool inch by baby inch. Quitting smoking, quitting a terrible job, breaking up with a boyfriend. The only ones that really stick are the ones that are done cold turkey. Ask anyone that made it stick. They stuck it out as long as they could, and then one day, kick. Or chop. Or slice. Whatever method they needed just so as it would be swift and merciless. And when you want something or someone gone, you don’t want to be left with a clinger. That’s how we decided to leave life. Or, shall we say, life, as we knew it.

Well, deciding turned out to actually be the easy part. And buying the old 68’ Land Yacht Airstream to fix up was the easy part. Getting it on the road was proving harder and harder with each passing day. Every time we would get a lump of cash to buy new wires or chrome dip the rusty trim, the tiny details that confirmed our originality, another bill would arrive. A letter from the IRS perhaps? Electricity? Who needs it? Holidays, birthdays, broken shoes, they all meant broken hearts for our house. How could paying for the things we needed so badly be keeping us from paying for the thing we wanted so much? I was ready to say screw the Airstream altogether.

Sleeping in the back of the truck was sounding better and better with each passing bill. That’s how we were measuring time by the way. Not in days, or weeks but bills. As in, which bills would we have to pay before we could put another $50 into the Airstream. It didn’t help that we had bought some books and magazines with fully finished out models in them. Hah! This was worse than looking in Vogue magazine and coveting a pair of Gucci heels. At least with the stilettos, I knew that in about six months they would be, hopefully with box intact, hopefully NOT gently scuffed, on the shelves of Last Call Neiman Marcus’s holy shoe event. No, this was worse. We had no idea when anything was going to happen. All we could do was wait, and polish and wait some more. Every attempt to plan, schedule or organize was ruined. Nothing was as easy as it seemed it was going to be. Everything took so many steps. Every little piece seemed more rusted than last. And once you start pulling it apart, so goes your life. Pulling apart bit by rusty bit. Until at last all you’re left with is a big empty hull, with no guts of any kind left inside. And that’s how I felt. Empty. Rusty. Incomplete.

This feeling is rolled into a tightly knit ball the morning I was sipping my coffee and trying desperately to find my “Happy Place”. We had just gone to see a counselor for my significant others issues and I was the supportive better half. But as I sat there smiling and nodding and trying to be understanding and patient, all I could do was feel jealous. This counselor was talking about a difficult issue, one of the other attendee’s difficult issues, and she mentioned my darling might want to find his “Happy Place”. Where the heck was my “Happy Place”? Why, when I don’t want to listen to the drama of other people’s difficult and very personal issues, do I not have a secret lovely thought that can be my retreat? Jealousy turned to frustration. And being frustrated just makes me pissed. But the only person I was pissed at was myself.

So I relentlessly scratched my brain for that illusive thread of memory that gave me a gooey warm feeling from head to toe. And magically it came. Like a flash of lightning. I retraced my steps and found my self in Marfa and Big Bend, last year, for my birthday. I had felt separation anxiety coming back from a vacation before. Mexico, Puerto Rico, The Ozarks, but never like when I had to come back to reality Big Bend. Maybe it was because the only way to truly see the West Texas Desert is to drive. And everyone that is a road trip person knows, sometimes it’s the longest drives that you get the most from. And being that it sometimes takes two or three hours just to get into the park, well, that gives you a lot in terms of road trip rewards. By the time we had got to Big Bend to camp it was our last day of the trip. We had already seen a mountain lion at the historic Indian Lodge Hotel, watched the Marfa Lights at midnight, peered at Saturn’s rings through a giant telescope, bought whiskey from a leathery old liquor man, had to shield my eyes from a dust storm, saw a pirate boat bar in Terlingua, and drove along side by side with the Rio Grande at sunset. All these things were sandwiched in between a feeling of utter freedom and a true sense of what it felt like to “discover” America. And it was completely breathtaking.

Unfortunately our time to leave had come to soon. And it felt awful. Driving through the red clay mountains on our way back to Austin after our last night camping under the biggest sky in America felt like knives in my eyes. Whatever life awaited me at home could never compare to the life I had imagined for myself here. I was a toothless barmaid in Terlingua. I was a trail guide along the lower basin. I saved havalinas with broken legs on my wild game preserve. I ran an organic fruit stand at the farmers market in Fort Davis and had a radio show on Marfa Public Radio. None of these personas were waiting for me back home. And as we drove away from the last leg of our trip, watching those sun burnt cliffs recede into the back of my memory I started to cry. Just a few silent tears at first. But they soon turned to a full-blown flash flood of frustration.

Not that I had so much work to get back to, but that I had to leave this sacred place that had healed my soul in such a short time. Frustrated that I didn’t just jump out of the car right then and there, stamp my foot, and refuse to leave. No place had ever made me feel so complete before. And no place has since. So when I found my “happy place” again, I did not want to leave. And that’s when I finally decided. That’s it. No more traffic, or college students. Why am I torturing myself? Lets just do it! So I am. Doing it. David and I are moving to Marfa, TX. And we are taking the unfinished Airstream with us. Maybe at least one of my crazy fantasies will come true.

UT Fashion Show

Friday April 17th was the Luminous, Spring 2009, UT Fashion show, and Pink did all the hair (while Sephora did all the make-up).

It was so much fun to use all our new favorite Kevin Murphy skills and wizardry to style some amazing looking hair on 23 models.

Samantha Breslow's article from the April 17th edition of the Orange Runway supplement in the Daily Texan titled, Creating The Look For 'Luminous' writes:
"Pink is experienced when it comes to working with big name clients' shows and events [...] they have styled celebrity's hair for the Austin Film Awards and the Austin Chronicle Music Awards." Amongst many others...

When asked to divulge names of celebrity clients, we refuse. Carter says, "I take my motto from Marilyn Monroe's stylist Kenneth: 'I don't talk about my customers living or dead.' Your seat in a salon has to be a cone of silence."

"Pink will creatively stitch[ed] up-dos with a needle and thread. According to Carter, stitching is a practice that has been used for years on Las Vegas showgirls so that pins do not fall to the floor and get in the way. 'We use a big plastic needle and upholstery thread, which comes in the same colors as hair does, and make loose, basing stitches.'"

Deborah has been working with the UT fashion group for the past 20 years, and states, "It's a cause that's dear to my heart." We can see many years to come of high fashion fun and great hair with some of the best design grads in Texas.
